The Hereditary Order of the Italian Lion is a society within the Noble Company of St. Mary of Walsingham comprised of Companions who are direct descendants of the first Norman rulers of southern Italy. The Norman rulers,William I "the Iron-Arm," Count of Apulia and Calabria and his successors Drago and Humphrey; Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, Calabria, and Sicily; and Roger I, Count of Sicily were members of the Hauteville/Altavilla dynasty from Normandy. The order fosters knowledge and interest in southern Italy, particularly during the Norman era. The order's emblem consists of a Norman lion holding a banner of the Hauteville coat of arms.
